As a port city, Wilmington is known as the gateway to Cape Fear Coast beaches like Wrightsville Beach, with its strong surf, and Carolina Beach, with its long boardwalk.

Downtown Wilmington is just a short drive away from the beach. Part of downtown’s historic district, the Riverwalk, is lined with restaurants, galleries and shops. It runs along the Cape Fear River in New Hanover County and is easily accessible to The Davis Community residents.

Airlie Gardens

Airlie Gardens started in 1884, when Pembroke and Sarah Jones purchased the property and transformed it into a picturesque garden. In 1999, the county purchased and restored Airlie’s 67 acres of gardens. Today, visitors can experience native plants, a butterfly house, animal exhibits and more.

Battleship North Carolina

Moored in quiet dignity and majesty, the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA, across the river from downtown Wilmington, beckons visitors to walk her decks. Envision the daily life and fierce combat her crew faced in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.

Bellamy Mansion Museum

Designed by architect James F. Post for the wealthy physician and merchant Dr. John D. Bellamy, the 10,000-square-foot, 22-room mansion was constructed primarily by skilled, enslaved workers and local, free black artisans between 1859 and 1861. Today, guests can explore the mansion, slave quarters and garden on self-guided and guided tours of the site. 

Cape Fear Museum

Founded in 1898, the Cape Fear Museum collects, preserves and interprets objects relating to the history, science and cultures of the Lower Cape Fear. The museum makes those objects and their interpretation available to the public through educational exhibitions and programs.

New Hanover County Arboretum

One of the nicest gardens in North Carolina is the New Hanover County Arboretum. Lush landscapes, flowering plants and bushes, verdant lawns and colorful water features combine to create a community garden that has attracted thousands of visitors each year since opening in 1989.

Tregembo Animal Park

Tregembo Animal Park is Southeastern North Carolina’s oldest zoo. The Tregembo family has locally owned and operated the zoo in its Wilmington, North Carolina, location for over 50 years. The animal park has over 75 species of zoo animals on display.

Wilmington Railroad Museum

Started in 1979 by three women and a table of ACL Railroad artifacts, the Wilmington Railroad Museum is dedicated to preserving the rich history of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and the history of railroading in the southeastern United States.

Wilmington Riverwalk

Developed in the 1980s as a way to generate more interest in the Cape Fear River waterfront regions of Wilmington’s historic downtown, today the Riverwalk encompasses a full mile of scenic boardwalk, hugging the borders of the riverfront, and providing visitors with endless views and easy access to some of the downtown’s most beloved attractions.
