Do You Get Your Senior Discount?
One of the perks of being over 55 is that many businesses offer senior discounts. These may range from a flat percentage (usually 10-15%) off of your purchases, to discounts on specific days or on certain products. Others may require that you meet certain requirements, such as an AARP membership. And who doesn’t love a bargain?
Not all senior discounts are advertised, so it pays to ask around and then plan your spending accordingly.
Here are some common areas where a senior discount may be available.
1. Restaurants
Many restaurants, especially chains and fast food establishments, offer discounts. Some places, like IHOP or Denny’s, have senior menu options at discounted prices. Others, like many McDonald’s locations, offer a senior discount on coffee.
Not all restaurants advertise their special deals for seniors, so it never hurts to ask about a senior discount when you’re dining out.
2. Grocery Stores
Some grocery stores offer special deals for seniors on specific days (usually either once a week or once a month) or on select items.
Even if you receive a weekly flyer, these deals might not be advertised, so it’s a good idea to check with your local stores to find out what specific discounts they may offer.
3. Retailers
Many retailers have discounts for seniors or have special senior days where their older customers receive special deals. Kohl’s, for instance, gives seniors 15% off on Wednesdays. And Michael’s offers 10% off every day.
4. Health and Wellness
Certain pharmacies, like Rite Aid, offer wellness programs for seniors. In addition, you may be able to get your eyeglasses at a discount. Lens Crafters offers discounts on frames and contact lenses for AARP members.
Many fitness centers offer seniors discounted memberships.
5. Cell Phone Plans
Verizon, AT&T, and several other cell phone carriers offer senior plans. A word of caution though – make sure that the plan you choose meets your needs. If you rarely use a cell phone, you may be able to get by with a cheaper plan, even if it’s not designed specifically for seniors.
6. Automotive Shops
You may be able to save money on car maintenance. Before you buy parts or take your car for servicing, check to see if they have senior pricing options. Many Jiffy Lube, Valvoline, and Midas locations offer a senior discount. Some auto parts stores also offer discounts. For example, Pep Boys gives seniors 10% off.
7. Travel and Entertainment
If you’re planning a trip or just looking for something entertaining near home, there are many senior discounts available. Before you purchase tickets or book reservations at any of the following, make sure you ask about special pricing for seniors.
- Movie theaters
- Museums
- Amusement Parks
- National Parks
- State Parks
- Hotels
- Airlines
- Cruise lines
- Bus lines
- Amtrak
- Car rental companies
