Volunteering is the perfect way for seniors to share their time

Spring is well underway, providing plenty of opportunities for active seniors to get outside, head off on road trips, and have some fun. As the weather gets warmer, members of The Davis Community here in Wilmington, NC have plenty of beachfront activities nearby. But there’s also so much more to do near our retirement community campus, with easy access to all the shops and restaurants along Wilmington’s historic Riverwalk. Below is a look of just some of the springtime activities happening nearby.

Fun Volunteering Opportunities in Wilmington, NC

Hanover County Arboretum - Wilmington NCSpring offers the opportunity to have fun by giving back. There are plenty local organizations seeking volunteers to devote their time and energy to educating and helping others.

Among them is the Friends of the New Hanover County Arboretum, which offers the chance to learn while growing. Volunteers prune, plant, weed, mulch, and cultivate the Arboretum gardens to keep them looking beautiful. As part of the Master Gardner program, some volunteers undergo additional training, so they can staff the Plant Clinic where they answer gardening questions from local residents and provide insights on the best ways to make their flora flourish.

The Arlie Gardens, meanwhile, says it’s always looking for volunteers, including garden guides that lead group tours while providing details about Arlie Gardens’ history and horticulture. There are also event volunteers, garden ambassadors, and others who donate their time at the Butterfly House and environmental programs there.

The Cameron Art Museum is another opportunity to give back. People volunteer in the nonprofit museum’s shop, answer visitor questions, and help sign up new members. The museum is a big booster of volunteer work, noting it provides the opportunity to meet lots of people and that volunteers enjoy perks like store discounts and special museum tours.

Have Fun visiting Historical Sites Near Wilmington, NC

In addition to volunteering, you can also head out on day trips that allow you to dig deeper into the history of the Wilmington area.

You can visit Bellamy Mansion Museum of History and Design Arts which features a main house built by skilled workers, enslaved people, and free Blacks and is an example of a 19th-century mansion constructed using multiple architectural styles.

Or you could tour the Poplar Grove Plantation, a former sweet potato and peanut plantation that’s part of the National Park Service’s Gullah Geechee Corridor dedicated to exploring the lives and culture of people who were enslaved in southeastern North Carolina.

There’s also Battleship North Carolina located right across the water from downtown Wilmington. You can stroll through its nine decks and imagine what it was like to serve on this warship, which took part in every major naval assault in the Pacific during World War II.
